Liam West – Master Photographer – M.Photog – APPAs 2014

What a cracker of a haul this year. I entered 4 images across 3 categories and received my first APPA Gold in the Commercial category along with a Silver plus a Silver in Advertising. My fourth image, a print in the Illustrative category was given 78 which is considered professional standard – not bad considering how far removed it was from my normal work (this NSFW image is here if you want to see it – click High Res to see it larger).

The best news is that this gave me 4 points which put me 2 points over what I required to achieve “Master Photographer” status – a goal I’ve been working towards since entering my first APPAs in 2008.

Salty Studio Launch Party!

SaltRocket

Thursday 18th April – the date was set, invite MailChimped and Facebooked and tied to a pigeon’s leg. The event that was over 3 years in the making (we never had a launch for our old studio!) finally came to fruition and a salty good time was had by all.

There was lightly salted beer –  a handcrafted brew by Dr Jonathon Carroll with pink salt added (his article about the making of it here), slider burgers, a popcorn machine and more salty food and booze than you could poke a prawn skewer at.

It turned out to be a highly successful night and was a great opportunity to catch up with clients we’re proud to call friends and friends we’re proud to call ‘hey you’.

Check out the time lapse from the first half of the night:

The first 2.5 hours of the 2013 Lightly Salted studio launch party, if you were there you enjoyed yummy sliders, lightly salted beer from the keg and a great atmosphere made up of a whole bunch of creative people.

Heath at Montage Creative is on the same wavelength as me. When he rang a couple of months ago and briefed me on this job I knew exactly what he wanted and I’ll be honest, it made me a little bit excited. Had I known we would end up shooting all three of these images on location on the hottest day of the month (33 degrees Celsius) I probably wouldn’t have been quite as excited. Who am I kidding, of course I would have! These kinds of shoots are why I do what I do. The challenges, the planning, the challenges, the hours of sitting in front of the Mac (in air-conditioned comfort), the challenges, the energy and the odd challenge along the way make this kind of work absolutely riveting! Each of these images is made up of bits and pieces that were all shot on the day with the odd bit thrown in for some extra detail.

It’s always great working with excellent Art Direction but I take my hat off to the client (Drivewear) for entrusting Montage and Lightly Salted to deliver the goods on this concept.
